The Clos Monlleó 2012 from winery Sangenis I Vaqué is a blend of 50% Carignan and 50% Grenache from more than 50 years old vines. The grapes for Clos Monlleo always come from the same, high altitude locations. The yield is unprecedentedly low: about 500 litres per hectare! The wine matures for 18 months in new French oak barriques (Allier).
The wine is not filtered or clarified. Every year between 2,000 and 3,000 bottles of this top wine are made. The top wine of this winery located in Porrera Monlleó is the surname of Pere Sangenís' ancestors who grew vines and made wine for centuries.
This Clos Monlleó shows a deep dark red colour.
In the medium(++) nose, dried red fruits, red and dark cherries and plums merge into its aromas with the spicy and roasted notes of the barrel, graphite and spices.
On the palate it is concentrated and structured, but also intensely mineral with sweet and silky tannins. The blend is dressed in smoky tones that remind us of the hours of the day when the sun warms the stones of the vineyard. The barrel is perfectly integrated and only enhances the virtues of a fruit of exceptional quality. It is long, very long.
Fits perfectly with:
Spicy dishes, hamburgers with blue cheese, old cheeses and red meat.
This red blend is the top wine of Sangenís i Vaqué. Due to the extremely low yield of the vines, which are up to 80 years old, the result is an extremely dense, deep wine. Monlléo is a grandiose wine with lots of extract, spice and ripe, supple tannins.
Robert Parker about the Clos Monlleó 2007:
The top of the range is the 2007 Clos Monlleó red, a 50/50 selection of their oldest Garnacha and Cariñena, fermented together and aged for 18 months in new French barriques. It has classic aromas of varnished wood, spice, toast, smoke, wet slate and graphite, in a style from the 1990s. It has evolved quite well in the bottle and feels polished, integrated and has some complexity.
