The Nit de Nin Mas d'en Caçador 2022 from winery Celler Nin Ortiz is a red blend of nearly 117-year-old Carinena, Garnacha and Garnacha Peluda vines and another 2% white grapes. The 2020 edition achieved the highest possible score at Robert Parker namely 100/100 Parker points.
These vines are planted on slatey, extremely barren steep slopes called "costers" in Priorat. In one of the most impressive locations in Priorat and at an altitude of 650 m above sea level, the north-facing steep slope of this vineyard (on the border between Porrera and Gratallops)
Everything here in the vineyard is manual labor. Tillage is only possible by mule. An extreme vineyard in every respect.
The wine is macerated and fermented as a whole cluster for a month with native yeasts in a 3,200-liter oak foudre, only then destemmed, and then aged in French barriques (225- and 300-liter oak barrels) for 18 months. Also, the Mas d'en Caçador always retains the unique freshness that characterizes all Nin-Ortiz wines, which always provides a wonderful elegance.
This Nit de Nin Mas d'en Caçador 2022 shows in the glass a deep purple-red color - almost black.
In the beautiful nose delicate aromas's of blackberries, cassis and roses with hints of black pepper, eucalyptus, bay leaf and balsamic.
On the palate dry, full-bodied with lively acidity and medium ripe and fine tannins. Nicely layered, well balanced and with great complexity. Supple, round and concentrated on the palate. The finish has medium(++) intensity. Already great but will keep getting better.
Fits perfectly with:
Beef, lamb, stews, game, tenderloin, roasted/grilled meats, Spanish jamon and hard cheeses.
Robert Parker gave the 2020 blend March as many as 100 Parker Points and described the wine as follows:
The 2022 Nit de Nin Mas d'en Caçador is elegant, complex and subtle, nuanced and insinuating. The palate shows great balance, very fine tannins (the perfect tannins!) and a long, very clean and smooth finish. A vintage of finesse and elegance with energy, power and light. This is incomprehensibly refined; there is purity, elegance, power and detail, symmetry and proportion. A wine that took my breath away.
For the record, the vineyard is a 3.4-hectare slope planted between 81 and 116 with Garnacha, Garnacha Peluda, Cariñena and 2% white varieties at 650 meters altitude on pure slate that they harvested on Sept. 10 and received 12 hectoliters per hectare (extremely low yields). The full bunches fermented with indigenous yeasts in a 3,200-liter oak foudre for four weeks, and the wine aged for 18 months in 225- and 300-liter oak barrels. It has 14.64% alcohol, a pH of 3.3 and 5.4 grams of acidity (tartaric acid). 2,193 bottles were filled in April 2022.
This vintage does not yet have a rating from Robert Parker. The 2021 received 98/100 points.
