El Pas de l´Estudiant 2023

Josep Grau Viticultor

Druiven90% Garnacha Peluda, 7% Cariñena and 3% Garnacha Blanca

El Pas de l’Estudiant 2023 is an elegant and expressive red wine from Josep Grau Viticultor in D.O. Montsant. This special cuvée is made from 90% Garnatxa Peluda, 7% Carinyena, and 3% Garnatxa Blanca, sourced from a historic plot planted in 1947 near Capçanes at an altitude of ±320 m. The vineyard is located on north-facing, steep terraces with calcareous soils and stone walls that prevent erosion — recently thoroughly restored by Josep Grau.

The grapes are hand-picked, individually selected, and fermented spontaneously (with indigenous yeasts) in a large ±2,500 L Stockinger foudre. The wine is then aged for 9 months sur lies in the same foudre. Production is very limited: approximately 3,344 bottles.

“An elegant and complex red wine with delicate finesse. Fine tannins support layers of forest fruits and ripe black fruit, infused with hints of fresh herbs and spices... very fresh palate with pure fruit expression” (96 pts Pedro Ballesteros MW)

On the nose: blackberries, forest fruits, violets, Mediterranean herbs, and a subtle minerality.
On the palate: fine tannins, refined, with a balance between elegance, depth, and freshness; a long, layered finish.

    About this wine
    • The name El Pas de l’Estudiant refers to the path that children from Serra d’Almos walked every day to school in Capçanes – symbolic of this historic plot that Josep Grau brought back to life.
    • The vineyard – approximately 1.5 hectares – is located at high altitude, faces north, and has been restored with traditional walls and ditches to prevent erosion.
    • The wine fits seamlessly with Josep Grau's philosophy: organic farming, low yields, manual harvesting, spontaneous fermentation, and sur-lies aging with minimal intervention.
    • It received 94 Parker points for the 2023 vintage, comparable to previous editions.
