Josep Grau Viticultor is a small-scale, idiosyncratic winery that works with great passion in both the Montsant wine region and the prestigious Priorat region in Catalonia, Spain. After a career in journalism, Josep Grau made a decisive choice in 2003 to live a life close to nature and his roots. His philosophy is simple but uncompromising: to make wines that speak from the vineyard, without fuss, with respect for tradition and a clear modern signature.
The vineyards are located at impressive altitudes between 350 and 700 meters, on poor, mineral soils—including the famous licorella slate in Priorat—which give the grapes a distinct character. Old vines of Garnatxa (Grenache), Carignan, Syrah, and indigenous white varieties yield low yields but intense, concentrated grapes. Everything is done by hand: from pruning to harvesting, and in the cellar, no modern tricks are used, but concrete cuves, wooden foudres, and large barrels, in which the wines ferment and mature spontaneously without excessive influence from wood.
Josep Grau's Priorat wines are a special chapter in his portfolio. Here he shows his most refined and profound interpretations of the landscape. Think powerful yet elegant wines full of dark berries, floral notes, graphite, and a remarkable freshness—a rare quality in this warm region. His Priorat wines are distinguished by their purity, balance, and complexity. They are made to be enjoyed now, but develop beautifully with years of bottle aging.
Josep Grau is internationally renowned for his pure style, ecological approach, and his ability to bring the unique character of Montsant and Priorat to life in the bottle. His wines are loved by connoisseurs looking for expression, elegance, and terroir. A winery for those who want to look beyond the established names and seek authenticity and inspiration in the glass.
