Celler Joan Simó

In Priorat, a true wine revolution began in the 1990s. The maternal family had been involved in viticulture in the region for generations, but the art of making good wine had fallen by the wayside and the grapes were sold to the local cooperative. Realizing the untapped potential in the old family vineyards that remained, Joan Simó decided in 1999 to restore the cellar of their historic winery in Porrera into a modern winery. Where there had once been stables and cellars for animals, they created a winery and aging room that can produce an annual output of 25,000 bottles.

The winery is owned by Gerard Batllvell Simó, with the support of my father, the advice of Uncle Josep, winemaker Josep Angel Mestres and his friend and passionate winemaker Toni Pena Lupión, they made their first vintage in 1999. It was an experiment to see what could be achieved with these old vines. It was an immediate success and after high scores in Wine Spectator, it quickly sold out to buyers in Switzerland and the United States. 

Since then they have continued to grow stronger and Les Eres now has a strong reputation in both the domestic and global wine markets. In 2001/2002 they planted 15,000 new vines on terraces in La Garranxa, a remote and abandoned hamlet high above Porrera. These vines enabled them to produce their second wine Sentius. In recent years they have also carefully selected grapes from another vineyard; the Carners, to produce one or two barrels of Les Eres Especial dels Carners.

The vineyards are roughly divided into two zones; the high altitude, cool vineyards around Porrera and La Garranxa and the lower altitude, hotter vineyards around Bellmunt de Priorat: Les Eres is located overlooking the village of Porrera and extends to nearly 3ha of steeply terraced costers (slopes) with 8,000 vines of cariñena and garnacha planted 93 years ago. La Garranxa is an abandoned hamlet 5 km above Porrera, here there are a small number of old cariñena and here they have planted 15,000 vines of garnacha, syrah and cabernet sauvingnon on newly constructed terraces climbing a steep hill that rises above the hamlet.

La Garranxa and Les Eres benefit from the cooling effects of the altitude and microclimate of the steep mountains surrounding the village. El Mollo, the highest peak in Priorat, rises above the vineyards of la Garranxa.

Tros Nou is located near the village of Bellmunt, its 3,800 vines were planted 87 years ago, mainly with hairy grenache, the rest being cariñena. This is the only vineyard that is relatively flat, it is also our hottest vineyard and is always harvested first.

Els Carners was only planted 83 years ago with 1,500 vines of cariñena and garnacha and is a small, steep enclave in the forest above Bellmunt. Dotted with olive trees, it is the source of their top wine Les Eres Especial, and only in years when they feel the quality deserves a special selection.

All three wines are made with one goal: wines with a unique personality that reflect their origins and terroir.

The limitations of the winery mean that they will always remain small, which allows them to maintain attention to detail. Joan Simó is involved in every operation, from pruning and treating the vines to harvesting, elaboration, refinement, bottling, labeling and finally sales. From day to day, his fingers are truly "on the pulse.

In addition to a solid home market, especially in the top restaurants of Catalonia, our wines are now exported all over the world to Switzerland, the USA, Canada, Belgium, the Philippines, Denmark, Austria and Germany, among others.
