Clos de L'Obac: a Vinous Jewell in the hills of Priorat.
After reading this article and tasting the wine, you can't help but agree.
The winery was started by Carles Pastrane and his wife Mariona Jarque.
In 1979, they were among the first pioneers who believed in the potential of the Priorat wine region. Together with a group of idealists, they started producing wine in Gratallops at the time.
It lasted until 1987 before the winery Clos de L'Obac was formally established. The first harvest took place in 1989, it was bottled in 1991. At that time, the same blend of grape varieties applied for all members of the founders group. The composition of that first blend is still used to make Clos de l'Obac 30 years later: Garnacha, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot and Cariñena, in the same percentage each vintage. In 1993, Clos de l'Obac wine was named one of the 150 best wines in the world by the World Wine Guide.
The wines of this winery are known for their elegance, refinement and minerality. Both red and white wines have an enormous ageing potential. In total, they own about 45 acres of vineyards and annual production is 60,000 to 70,000 bottles. Vines are as old as 80 years.
